resurrection
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.
That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms,  far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.”
Ephesians 1:18-23

When you put your hand into a surgical glove it fits skin-tight. Your hand fills the glove and every knuckle and joint is clearly seen. There are no pockets of empty space, no loose folds, because you need to able to feel the finest thread, the most delicate part.

Jesus was the skin-tight glove on God’s hand: moving, feeling, doing, speaking at the impulse of His Father’s love. In Hebrews 1:3 the Bible says, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being”.  Yet Jesus came to this earth fully human. He had to come in this way, because only someone fully human and fully God could break the power of sin and death over us through His own life and death.

Being fully human, Jesus was found in Mary’s womb, working at the carpenter’s bench, calling the disciples by the sea, preaching on the mountainside, healing the man at the pool, talking to the woman at the well, hanging on the cross, lying in the tomb. Jesus’ humanity restricted Him to one place at a time so a very limited number of people could actually meet Him.

But after Jesus’ resurrection He became the One “who fills everything in every way” and we who believe in Him have become “His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.”  We are now the glove Jesus fills to overflowing to touch the world with the power of our Father’s love.

Often we want to reserve a room in our heart for Jesus.  We try to localize, limit, and control Him.  But the resurrected Jesus is no longer constrained, confined, or limited by anything of this world.  His power is far above all rule and authority, all power and dominion.  Everything is under His feet and He is the head over everything for us.  We are not in charge, He is.  It is not our incomparably great power, but His.

I realize that I have often wanted earthly Jesus – in the flesh and within reach.  I now know how much better it is to have the resurrected Jesus filling, moving, inspiring, healing, loving, forgiving, and empowering us who believe and choose to serve Him in every time and place.

Paul said, “… if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we will certainly also be united with Him in a resurrection like His.” Romans 6:5

When we surrender our lives to our Father as Jesus surrendered His human life, trusting fully in the love God has for us; and if we invite the risen Christ to fill us up to the fullness of His being; He will overflow out of us into the world.  It’s His resurrected nature (supernature!) to continuously fill and expand and spill over until “He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.” Ephesians 4:10

Risen, indeed.
