“They asked one another,

‘Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’”
Luke 24:32

Jesus is alive!

So many times I have read this Scripture and dreamed of being on the road to Emmaus that day with Jesus. How I long to hear Him explain everything!

Have you ever felt your heart burn within you as the Lord opened His Word to you?  John Wesley, the father of Methodism, did:

In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading (Martin) Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.

I love that the Rev. Wesley was an unwilling participant! Even the men walking to Emmaus had no inkling of what was in store for them. Indeed, they weren’t walking toward Jerusalem, but away, after hearing the women’s news of His resurrection. Unwilling. Unknowing. Unbelieving. And here comes Jesus, sneaking up on them, firing up their hearts.

Do you understand? He’s looking for us. He’s seeking us. He loves us.

Jesus does it all for us: He died for us, defeated death and sin, rose for us, searches our hearts, convicts our sin, forgives us, cleanses us, fills us with His Spirit, and teaches us everything we need to know.

Is your heart burning?
