“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”   Acts 2 (NIV)

Ten days after Jesus’ ascension into heaven the believers were still together, praying and awaiting the promise of power from on high, when suddenly…

  • They heard what sounded like a violent wind blowing from heaven’s direction – the entire house rumbling with the roar.
  • They saw what appeared to be flames of fire splitting into individual portions and resting on each one.
  • They were filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • They began to speak in other Spirit-powered tongues.

Ten days sitting around and waiting.

Ten days of unceasing prayer.

Ten days and suddenly they heard, they saw, they were filled, they spoke!

Whatever lethargy they may have been experiencing disappeared, I am sure, when the Lord set them aflame with His Spirit, completely torching whatever expectations they had in the process.

Fire is an attention-getter at all times; whether as a candle, a camp fire, or a catastrophic blaze.  When you add wind and fire together – look out! Flames leap across divides when driven by wind, running from roof top to roof top, from tree to bush to plain.

Jesus had said to them, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1 (NIV)

We all, with hearts aflame, are wind-driven by the Spirit from our homes and churches, across our neighborhoods, and around the globe; setting God’s Holy Fire of love to the ends of the earth. Believers who hear, see, are filled, and speak of the Risen Christ.
